Rotarians from the Rotary Club of La Jolla wanted to do something special for the community. Realizing that there were no welcoming signs to their beautiful community, they decided to create one and include a lovely garden to accent its location. They wanted something that would bring smiles to traveler's faces as they enter the community from Freeway 52.
That ugly word - COVID - stopped them dead cold. They had to shelve the idea for a while, but they never lost the dream of wanting to create a welcoming sign. The project was later resurrected, and this is the end result of their efforts. But they didn't do it alone. Someone offered to design the sign pro bono and a Rotarian from La Jolla Sunrise designed the garden, also pro bono, and procured the plants. Many community organizations, businesses and individuals joined them in contributing to the project, including the other three area Rotary clubs. The City Department of Parks and Recreation agreed to maintain the garden as part of its gas tax median efforts.
The stand-alone Rotary wheel was used rather than the logo from the Rotary Club of La Jolla in acknowledgment of the contributions from the other area Rotary clubs - it was a true joint venture.
