On Saturday Sept. 13th over 600 volunteers descended upon La Jolla Shores for a heartwarming day of service - taking 80+ disabled children and adults surfing.
This is the 9th year that Brett Morey, Past President of the Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle and Founder of Surfers Unite Rotarian Fellowship has assisted with this Life Rolls On (LRO) event. "This year we had over 20 Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interact members from across the district assisting on "Team Pink," Brett said.
Founded by Jesse Billauer, a former rising surf star who became a quadriplegic after a tragic accident, Life Rolls On has grown into a national movement. Jesse, now a two-time World Champion in adaptive surfing, created the foundation to help others with disabilities enjoy the ocean through surf and skate events across the country.
Brett Morey, founder of Surfers Unite, a Rotary Fellowship, and past president of the Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle, has partnered with Life Rolls On for eight years. “There’s nothing like seeing a hearing-impaired child light up with joy or watching someone who’s had a stroke ride a wave,” Brett shared.
For those who have never witnessed a Life Rolls On's "They will Surf Again" event, it is beyond moving. Brett and his wife Karla were able to take 42-year-old John Harshman, who has Cerebral Palsy, surfing and it meant the world to him and his mother Heidi Dorman. Surfers Unite members support the event with friends from the surf community in La Jolla, Huntington Beach, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara and as well as some along the East Coast.
October 4th is the final event of the 2025 season for Life Rolls On. If you're interested contact, Brett or visit the Surfers Unite site at www.surfersunite.org. You will find this Rotary Fellowship also has a few other amazing events going on in September and through the year. In fact, according to Brett, they will have a number of Rotarians throughout the district are involved in the Sept. 27th 100 Wave Challenge for Boys to Men Mentoring at Mission Beach.
