After numerous winter storms created by atmospheric rivers and El Niño events, Rotarians and Rotaract members from across District 5340 joined forces in the Cupid’s Clean Up at Mission Bay. Lead by Surfers Unite Rotarian Fellowship Founder Brett Morey and his wife Karla, both Rotarians in the Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle, more than 30 volunteers showed up to clean up the sand, the park, boardwalk and parking lots. Over a dozen UCSD Rotaractors participated along with members of Pacific Beach Rotaract & Rotarians from around the District representing Carlsbad Hi-Noon, La Jolla Golden Triangle, La Mesa Sunrise and San Diego Coastal. Many members wore NFL jerseys since it was Super Bowl weekend as well as Surfers Unite hats, shirts and sweatshirts which drew attention to those walking along the shore. The event not only removed debris but created new friendships and interest from non-Rotarians to join in on future volunteer opportunities.
For those interested in participating in upcoming volunteer opportunities such as the teaching inner city kids how to surf with City2Surf and Hope Leadership Academy, volunteering as a family at the Switchfoot Bro-AM in Encinitas, assisting at-risk youth through the 100 Wave Challenge and Boys to Men Mentoring or assisting disabled children and adults with Life Rolls On at La Jolla Shores simply text “SURF” to 858-602-2532 or register at: www.surfersunite.org.
