Thanks to the Surfers Unite Rotarian Fellowship crew, almost a dozen symphony musicians from France, Germany and Mexico along with a couple local San Diego Youth Symphony young adults were taught how to surf in the 8th Annual Rotary MusiCamp Learn to Surf event which was held at 18th Street on July 29th.

Surfers Unite Founder and Past President of the Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle Brett Morey started this event back in 2012 as he had hosted a student from Germany. Brett asked his dear friend, the late Gary McElroy of San Diego Downtown Breakfast, “Gary, what if I took these kids surfing before they fly back to their countries"? He was all for it and so the tradition began in 2012.

This year surf coaches consisted of Big Kahuna Vince Ponce of the Rotary Club of Carlsbad Hi Noon, friends in the surf community Gary Giffin and lifetime members Danny Quisenberry (Rotary Club of Carlsbad Hi Noon), Brett Mattei (Rotary Club of Del Mar), Mark Matthews (Rotary Club of La Mesa, Derren Lechuga (San Diego Coastal Rotary Club) and fellow Rotarians of La Jolla Golden Triangle Michael Slentz, Ranjan Lahiri and Karla & Brett Morey.   Surfers Unite events are another great way to bring in potential members and share the stoke of Service Above Self.

Rotary District 5340 started the Rotary MusiCamp three-week short-term exchange program almost 20 years ago and thanks to Rotarians like Sue Greenway and others the tradition continues.  If anyone would like to serve as a host next year, please contact Sue at 858-531-8246.

For those interested in getting involved in upcoming service opportunities such as assisting disabled children and adults with Life Rolls On Foundation in Huntington Beach or La Jolla Shores, check out the Events page at www.surfersunite.org.  Surfers Unite is fortunate to also be assisting the top women surfers in the world as volunteers for the September. 16-18 Nissan Supergirl Pro in Oceanside.  Sign up to be a part of the action or text “Surf” to Brett at 858-602-2532.
