Music filled the Dove Library in Carlsbad on Saturday, April 18, as an audience of approximately 80 Rotarians, students, family members, and friends came together for the Winners’ Celebration Concert of the Rotary District 5340 Youth Instrumental Music Competition.
Eight outstanding student musicians performed—one joining via live Zoom—and the room rose to the moment as audience members selected winners by vote in both the Under 16 and 16+ age divisions.
District Governor Luis Carranza and 2026–27 District Governor-elect Jeb Bakke joined the celebration and shared remarks with the audience—made even more memorable after a spirited rendition of “Happy Birthday” in honor of DG Carranza.
The evening’s highest honor, the Robert Hartsfield Award for Musical Excellence, was presented to Zen Parris (violin, Under 16) and Naomi de la Motte (violin, 16+). Each received a $1,000 award, and six additional Distinguished District Finalists were celebrated with $500 awards—recognition that affirms the dedication, discipline, and artistry these young musicians bring to every note.
Zen Parris was sponsored by the Rotary Club of San Marcos, and Naomi de la Motte by the Rotary Club of Rancho Santa Fe. Heartfelt thanks to District Governor Luis Carranza, the twelve participating Rotary clubs, and the many generous donors whose support continues to open doors for young artists and strengthen the cultural life of our communities.
