Work, Party and Make a Difference

Project Mercy is a 501-C (3) non-profit agency based in San Diego, California. The goal of Project Mercy is the improvement of basic living standards and quality of life for impoverished families who live in conditions precarious to their health in the colonias outside of Tijuana and Tecate, Mexico. There is no running water and no electricity in these communities currently.

The Project Mercy program is based on three criteria: Need, length of time in the program, and amount of “sweat equity” assistance given. The residents work on at least four houses for their neighbors prior to receiving their own. This draws people together and promotes a sense of community. There are exceptions to the rule where single mothers or disabled persons are involved.

Several Rotary clubs have been building houses with Project Mercy over the last several years – and our District would like to see Rotary have a bigger role in this life changing humanitarian project.

District 5340 in a partnership with Project Mercy are going to work together to build 10-20 houses in the rural area between Tecate and Tijuana on December 4, 2021 before the coming holidays. Should December not be ideal for your club, there may be another opportunity in the Spring of 2022.

The Rotary “Work, Party and Make a Difference” concept is for people from our district to work together with these local homeless people to raise houses in one day to provide clean, sturdy homes in a Rotary block with possible additional dwellings to be added at a later date.

How can your club get involved? Each house has a cost of $6,800 for the basic build. If an outhouse is built – that cost is $700. Also possible add ons are, solar lighting panels for $165, and other household items such as bedding, food, etc. are needed as well.

If your club isn’t able to pay for a whole house, partnerships with other clubs can be arranged. If your club wants to come down and help with the building – that is possible as well...
Transportation buses can be arranged if enough people are interested in chartering to fill them.

AND.... If your club wants to make a party of it – there is a hotel in Tijuana that will give District 5340 Rotarians a special rate of $90 per double occupancy. Dinner can also be arranged that evening and a brunch on Sunday morning before returning to San Diego.
