On March 13, 2018, Old Mission Rotary Club was treated to an amazing Four-Way Test Speech Contest.  It was a regional competition made up of six students sponsored by clubs across Rotary District 5340; the competition was brilliant.

Once again, Old Mission Rotary Club's Four-Way Test Speech Contest Chairman, Eric Benink, organized a flawless event. District 5340 Four-Way Test Chair, Dick Goodlake, was also in attendance.  Rotarian sponsors from Club 33, Brawley, La Mesa Sunrise and Coronado were at the event with family, friends and teachers.

Contestants were introduced as speakers A through F and had between five and seven minutes to present their topic and discuss it in the context of the Rotary Four-Way Test.  The first speaker was Rose Fierenza who discussed the responsibility of voting in a democratic society.  Ivan Jimenez discussed how humor can be used to enhance communication and expose the truth.  Kaseba Chibweth talked about the perception of beauty in our modern society and how destructive the notion of beauty can be.  Luis Lopez discussed second chances in the context of his own life.  Jasmine Jimenez passionately promoted the medical use of stem cells and discussed the collision of science and theology.  Olivia Blore pleaded for the modern world to protect the elephant population from slaughter by poachers with an international ban on the ivory trade.

The winners were:   1st Place - Kaseba Chibweth, cheered on by her immigrant mother from Zambia
                                    2nd Place - Jasmine Jimenez
                                    3rd Place - Luis Lopez

The Four-Way Speech Contest Finals will take place at Liberty Station Conference Center on Thursday, April 26 from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m.
