The two groups teamed up to remove weeds and trash that once littered the pathway to the school.
With the support of the Rotary Club of La Jolla, a group of local students completed a project last month to re-landscape what was once a weed-and-trash-filled pathway to La Jolla High School. The Rotary Club covered the $2,000 for plants and supplies to fill an approximately 4-by-100-foot space along Westbourne Street leading to the front door of the school. Students were then tasked with planting the new materials. Rotarian Craig Schniepp spoke to the significance of their re-landscaping project.
“All schools now only have one point of entry,” Schniepp explained. “[So] everyone has to walk past this section. It was nothing but weeds and trash. We wanted something all students, staff and parents would enjoy and be proud of.” Thus, volunteers from the Interact club of La Jolla High —which is sponsored by Rotary and does projects on campus — cleared the dirt and re-landscaped the area in early February “to beautify the entrance for all who go to and from the school each day,” according to Schniepp. “It will only look better as plants grow,” he added.
La Jolla High School principal Chuck Podhorsky agreed. “We are incredibly grateful to be part of such an extraordinary community,” Podhorsky said. “Our local Rotary Club is an invaluable partner to our school and our students, consistently demonstrating generosity, service and a deep commitment to supporting young people.
“The replanting and beautification of the area in front of our school is yet another example of their kindness and dedication,” he continued. “Their efforts not only enhance the physical environment of our campus but also reflect the strong spirit of collaboration and care that makes our community so special."
