It is with sadness and a sense of great loss that I share with Rotarians in District 5340 that Terry Caster has informed me that his wife of 65 years, Barbara Caster, has passed away.  I learned of this news while I am in Costa Rica observing a project that the two of them started.

Barbara's legacy goes far beyond a successful family business and charitable works far to numerous to mention.  What I do want to mention is  Terry and Barbara have been steadfast supporters of various causes of the Rotary Foundation for many years.  In my experiences with them, all decisions were made jointly.  Examples include giving over $1.6 million to the Rotary Foundation for polio eradication and establishing an endowment for the Rotary Peace Centers Program at $750,000.

As I write this, I am at the University for Peace in Costa Rica with Rotary scholars from Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.  These students come from countries that share a common basin where there is little regional water planning and thus the region is prone to conflict.  When I described this situation to Barbara and Terry several years ago, their immediate collective response was "Can we do something to help this situation?"  They have been supporting many aspects of a program bringing professionals together from the Central Asia region for workshops and transboundary water planning.  This has evolved to the current status with the scholars studying in a program starting at the University of Peace, going on the IHE Delft University in the Netherlands, and finishing at Oregon State University.

The Caster's strong faith has been a guiding light throughout their business endeavors and as they make their philanthropic decisions.  Last night at the Costa Rico Rotary's Welcome Celebration, the Muslim students  joined us in a prayer for Barbara and her family.  The Casters' best represent this year's theme: BE THE INSPIRATION.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church, located at 3131 Governor Drive, San Diego, CA  92121.

In Loving Memory
Barbara Caster (1931 - 2018)
