The 7th Annual Rotary District 5340 / University of San Diego Joan B. Kroc School of Peace & Studies' Peace Forum took place Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Theatre at USD. Dr. Cynthia Villis, Assistant Provost at USD and a member of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary, served as host of the forum, featuring a number of presentations on:
- Defying Extremism
- Contact Theory: An Approach to Peacebuilding
- The Bent Prop Project: Making Peace Across Time and Distance
- Presentations by the Rotary and Grillo-Marxuach Scholars on Peacebuilding
- Presentation of the Prestigious Peacemake of the Year Award
Dr. Patricia Márquez, Dean of the USD Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies was also awarded the 2018 Pathways to Peace Award. The Pathways to Peace Award is the Rotary District's major award given for exemplary performance in the field of peace building and peace making. Honorees have made a significant, distinguished difference in advancing conflict prevention and resolution, promoting understanding of the advancement of peace and human rights through their contributions and efforts for peace building.
The award was presented by Scott Carr, District Governor and Joy Prowse, Chair of the Pathways to Peace Award. Dr. Márquez' research focuses on the intersection of business and social value creation, with an emphasis on alleviating poverty through free market mechanisms. Since her arrival at USD in 2007, Dr. Márquez has developed the Center for Peace and Commerce (CPC), the Social Innovation Challenge and the USD Changemaker Hub. Dean Márquez was also awarded the Paul Harris Fellow, the first time a recipient of the Pathways to Peace Award had earned the distinction. Named after the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris Fellows power the Rotary Foundation and its peace-building projects across the globe.
"The annual Peace Forum is a vital link between Rotary and the peace building taking place at the University of San Diego," said Carr. "Peace is a major priority of Rotary and its Foundation. The Rotary Foundation, one of the highest-rate charities ever ranked by Charity Navigator, has six main areas of focus. And every single one of these areas, every path we take, leads back to peace."
