The goal of Project Mercy is the improvement of basic living standards and quality of life fo r impoverished families who live in conditions precarious to their health in the colonias outside of Tijuana and Tecate\, Mexico. There is no runn ing water and no electricity in these communities currently. The Project Mercy program is based on three criteria: Need\, length of time in the pr ogram\, and amount of “sweat equity” assistance given. The residents work on at least four houses for their neighbors prior to receiving their own . This draws people together and promotes a sense of community. There are exceptions to the rule where single mothers or disabled persons are invo lved. Several Rotary clubs have been building houses with Project Mercy o ver the last several years – and our District would like to see Rotary ha ve a bigger role in this life changing humanitarian project. District 534 0 in a partnership with Project Mercy are going to work together to build 10-20 houses in the rural area between Tecate and Tijuana on December 4\ , 2021 before the coming holidays. Should December not be ideal for your club\, there may be another opportunity in the Spring of 2022. The Rotary “Work\, Party and Make a Difference” concept is for people from our dist rict to work together with these local homeless people to raise houses in one day to provide clean\, sturdy homes in a Rotary block with possible additional dwellings to be added at a later date. How can your club get i nvolved? Each house has a cost of $6\,800 for the basic build. If an outh ouse is built – that cost is $700. Also possible add ons are\, solar ligh ting panels for $165\, and other household items such as bedding\, food\, etc. are needed as well. If your club isn’t able to pay for a whole hous e\, partnerships with other clubs can be arranged. If your club wants to come down and help with the building – that is possible as well... Transp ortation buses can be arranged if enough people are interested in charter ing to fill them. AND.... If your club wants to make a party of it – ther e is a hotel in Tijuana that will give District 5340 Rotarians a special rate of $90 per double occupancy. Dinner can also be arranged that evenin g and a brunch on Sunday morning before returning to San Diego.
