Amy Steward (left), is presented The Rotary International Rotarian Spouse/Partner Service Award at the Coronado Rotary Meeting on June 3 by Rotary District President, Louise Andres.  Mary Griffin, Coronado Rotary Club President, looks on with pride.
Amy Steward, Coronado Middle School (CMS) teacher, received the prestigious Rotary International ROTARIAN SPOUSE/PARTNER SERVICE AWARD.  The award, recognizes spouses of Rotarians who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service through Rotary.  Annually, Rotary awards only 100 of these awards globally.

In her presentation, District Governor Andres emphasized that awardees are selected solely on the basis of humanitarian service rendered through Rotary, with an emphasis on personal volunteer efforts and active involvement in helping others.  This is the first time the award had been received by the spouse of a Rotarian in District 5340 which comprises 65 Rotary Clubs.

A very surprised Amy Steward graciously thanked everyone explaining that she had attended with husband and Coronado Rotarian, Dan’l Steward, thinking she was here to see daughter, D’Amy, who was participating in the RYLA  group presentation that day.  With the show of family civic involvement, Amy’s loving words “everything we do, we do as “Team Steward” could not have been more poignant.

Andres went on to share a partial list of Amy’s far-ranging contributions that include:  instituting and overseeing numerous CMS humanitarian projects such as collecting and distributing clothing for an orphanage in Mexico and participation in numerous help-the-homeless programs in San Diego;  devising and executing a community self-help project that moved 34 CMS classrooms between campuses in a 4 hour period; participating for over 16 years in Coronado Rotary activities such as monthly beach clean-ups, FLAGS ON THE AVENUE, ROTARIANS AT WORK DAY, Christmas Santas, and LOW TIDE RIDE AND STRIDE.  Amy also instituted and coordinates Coronado schools’ TAKE A VET TO SCHOOL PROGRAM - an annual salute to American veterans described by attending veterans as one of the most powerful experiences of their lives.

Summarizing Amy’s contributions, Andres stated “Amy is a model of the Rotary creed in action.”
