District News

This weekend, Rotary District 5340 conducted its 20th Annual Model United Nations in Del Mar with 42 countries represented by teams of two from 20 difference schools debating two resolutions; Specific Actions to Address Loss of Global Diversity and Counter Terrorism: To Build a Safer World.

As Model United Nations delegates, students become exposed to and engaged in major world issues, while meeting and working alongside their peers from different socio-economic groups, cultures, and backgrounds.  This experience is very similar to the situations encountered by actual delegates to the United Nations.  Students will strengthen their leadership qualities while applying their studies in such areas as history, geography, and science to practical real-world situations.  Most importantly, they will learn how to peacefully resolve conflicts and reach consensus on various issues – critical tools to become peacebuilders and community leaders.  This is how we Create Hope in the World.

The Rotary Club of Coronado annually presents a Peacemaker Award to an individual or group whose service promotes good will and exemplifies “people of action.”  In recognition of his leadership in tackling the human trafficking epidemic, the club presented this year’s award to San Diego Club Rotarian Dave Oates. Active in this cause since 2019, Dave continues to spearhead preventative, education and survivor support initiatives in and out of Rotary to increase awareness of the scourge in the region and encourage active involvement in combatting it.

In addition to his anti-human trafficking work within Rotary, Dave also serves on San Diego County’s Anti-Human Trafficking Advisory Council, which reports to the County Board of Supervisors on all matters relating to this issue.

For 15 years, Nancy Stoke at the Torrey Pines Rotary Club has been collecting toys at the Del Mar Fair.  Each year, she and her team of dedicated volunteers set up collection boxes and collect toys and stuffed animals from willing participants.  Volunteers interact with departing Fair guests to encourage donations of toys won at the Fair, answer questions, arrange for hand-offs of gently used donations that may be at home, and hand out bookmarks or some token item as a thank you for a donation which has Rotary contact info on the back.  Volunteers get complimentary admission tickets to the Fair, so you can enjoy the Fair before or after your shift.  Click "Read More" to continue reading about this membership initiative that we would like all clubs to participate in.
